Built on Heritage.

Defined By Quality.

For over 170 years, James Lever has been a trusted British manufacturer and supplier of rope, twines, cords, lines and associated products. Founded in 19th-century Bolton, Lancashire, the business was established on a clear and practical principle: recovering waste yarns and transforming them into sturdy rope to supply the region’s cotton mills and industrial infrastructure.

A sixth generation family business, manufacturing in Bolton since 1856.

Our Origins

Industrial Heritage

Adapting to a changing industry

As industrial machinery evolved and belt-driven systems replaced traditional rope drives, demand for heavy driving ropes declined. In response, James Lever moved into the general cordage market, producing twines and cords for wider trade and industrial use, including polished cotton twines for parcel tying, packaging and textile handling.

Specialist products emerge

This shift also led to the development of specialist products such as waxed cotton sash cords, where strength, smooth operation and durability were essential. These products marked a key stage in the company’s evolution, allowing it to remain relevant as industrial requirements changed.
